Riding the Future: The Vessev VS-9 hydrofoil limousine
Kiwi ingenuity has long been synonymous with bold ideas and practical solutions, and Vessev, an Auckland-based company founded in 2018, is a shining example of this ethos. In May 2024, they unveiled a prototype electric hydrofoil limousine that’s making waves on urban waterways. Leveraging advanced foiling technology inspired by America’s Cup racing yachts, Vessev is one of several innovators at the forefront of an emerging zero-emission maritime revolution. We had the privilege of test-riding their VS-9 prototype, a novel 10-seater electric passenger hydrofoil set to commence commercial service with New Zealand's largest ferry operator later this month.
At first glance, the VS-9 features a boxy, utilitarian design offset by large panoramic windows, an open-plan cabin, and a high-quality finish. Its flat wing-deck makes it potentially adaptable for a wide variety of use cases, yet the primary focus of this model is unmistakably on passenger transfers. This is evident in the perimeter seating arrangement, which maximises cabin capacity while maintaining a comfortable, spacious environment.
Out on Waitematā Harbour, the experience was nothing short of surreal. The ride quality was incredibly smooth—far superior to the jolting motion of the chase boat traveling alongside. Thanks to the active foil stabilisation system, which engages early at 12 knots to counteract pitch and roll, the transition to gliding above the water was seamless. The only noticeable clue was a gentle bank during turns, a unique sensation that added to the futuristic feel.
The VS-9 is powered by a state-of-the-art electric drivetrain, delivering exceptional efficiency and performance. With fuel consumption reduced by up to an estimated 90% compared to traditional vessels, it delivers a service speed of 25 knots and a range of 40 nautical miles when fully loaded. These impressive specifications make it an ideal solution for urban waterway transfers, providing a sustainable, high-speed alternative for both commuter and commercial use.
Vessev’s hydrofoil technology not only enhances speed and efficiency but also significantly reduces wake, ensuring minimal environmental impact—a vital feature for bustling harbours and sensitive ecosystems. Even when accelerating before take-off the VS-9's wake appeared noticeably less than a conventional vessel of comparable size. This may offer an advantage for transport operators when securing a dispensation for regulatory speed limits in some areas.
We toured Vessev's manufacturing facility, where their team shared insights into the groundbreaking technology behind their vessel. Designed with premium tourism services in mind, their first commercial vessel is set to launch with Fullers360 in New Zealand on 29th January 2025, marking a significant milestone in sustainable maritime travel. A heartfelt thanks to Vessev CEO Eric Laakmann and his team for allowing us to experience this remarkable innovation up close.
As Brisbane Waters WaterBUS explores pathways to sustainable and efficient transport on the NSW Central Coast, companies like Vessev inspire us to envision a brighter, greener future on the water.

Candela to build a manufacturing facility in the United States
Jeff Cohen of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, USA, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming arrival of the first Candela P-12 Shuttle on Lake Tahoe. The P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry with a capacity of 30 passengers, marks a significant step forward in sustainable maritime transport. To support this innovation, Candela plans to establish a manufacturing facility in the U.S. for local production.
Meanwhile, in Sweden, the Candela P-12 Shuttle has become a runaway success within Stockholm’s public transport system. Demand has surged to such an extent that passengers are being turned away at the terminal, according to insights shared by Candela’s APAC CEO, Björn Antonsson, during our meeting last month.
We’re excited to welcome a team from Candela to the NSW Central Coast later this year and will keep you updated on their latest international developments.
