Central Coast Ferries

Opal Card comes to Central Coast Ferries

Brisbane Water’s regular passenger ferry is joining the ticketing system Coast commuters already use on trains and buses.

Central Coast Ferries, the family-owned run from Woy Woy to Saratoga, Davistown and Empire Bay, is under a new Transport for NSW contract that brings Opal onto the route. Once readers are in at the wharves, passengers tap on and off instead of buying a separate ticket each trip.

The gain is simple. Weekly Opal caps, concession and Gold Senior fares, and transfer discounts with trains or buses replace a stand-alone cash ticket. From 1 April 2026 the operator moved to published single-trip fares (adult $10.50, concession and child $5.30) while readers were installed. When they go live, the service is to accept Opal only.

How Candela's flying ferries could bring commuters back to the water

Compared to a car, a smaller boat consumes 15 times more fuel per kilometer. But if you want to use batteries, they contain much less energy than diesel or gasoline, so you have a challenge.

The answer came from re-exploring hydrofoil technology.
