Candela in the Maldives

Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil

Candela set to revolutionise transport in the Maldives

Swedish electric boat pioneer Candela has secured its largest-ever fleet order: 10 P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels sold to Maldivian operator Ego Shuttle, with an option for 10 more, in a deal worth over €17 million. Starting in 2026, the “flying” P-12s will shuttle tourists from Malé International Airport to resorts across the atolls, replacing the noisy, fuel-hungry speedboats that currently dominate transfers. The Maldives, targeting net-zero emissions by 2030, will become the first nation to deploy Candela’s technology at scale and take a major step toward decarbonising its vital tourism transport sector.

Each 30-knot, 30-passenger P-12 uses 80% less energy than conventional vessels by lifting the hull on computer-controlled foils, delivering an almost wake-free and seasickness-free ride while producing zero emissions and minimal noise to protect fragile coral ecosystems. Passengers will enjoy Wi-Fi, entertainment, and refreshments in near silence. Ego Shuttle CEO Shabir Walji called it a “world-first” for the archipelago, and Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog summed it up simply: “It’s better for passengers and better for the planet.” With local training and service hubs included, the project also creates new green jobs as the Maldives pioneers sustainable paradise travel.
